If you could quietly step back into one books for just one ordinary afternoon… Which one would you choose? For me… It would always be The Secret Garden.
Not because I think the story is unfinished. Quite the opposite. It ends exactly as it should:
The garden blooms again. Mary discovers joy and Colin discovers courage. The house fills with laughter instead of silence. It’s the perfect happy ending.
And maybe that’s exactly why I want one more chapter. Not another mystery or an adventure. I don’t need a storm, I don’t need a twist. I simply want to walk through the garden one spring morning. To see the roses climbing the old walls, to hear Colin laughing in the distance.. To find Mary kneeling in the soil with muddy hands and no intention of keeping her clothes clean. I want proof that some happy endings continue quietly long after the final page.
Perhaps that’s why certain books stay with us. We don’t miss the story. We miss the feeling… that feeling that somewhere behind the pages, life carries on.
Maybe the robin still visits every morning, maybe the garden blooks a little differently each year. maybe the children grew up… but never stopped believing that broken things could bloom again…
I’d like to think so. Because, the older I get, the more I realise that life isn’t really made up of grand adventures. It’s made up of ordinary mornings. Cups of coffee, gardens that need tending, people who make a house feel like home.
Perhaps, that’s why The Secret Garden doesn’t really a sequel for me. It simply reminds me to keep looking after my own little corner of the world.
And maybe… that’s the most beautiful ending a book could ever have.
