Daily writing prompt
What’s one habit that has improved your life the most?

Today’s prompt is a good one. I spent my morning thinking about it and considering all the possible answers to it… So… let’s have a cup of coffee and let me tell you about the habit that made my life better.

It’s not the kind of habit that ends up in a self-help book. It’s not waking up at 5 am every day, running marathons, drinking kale smoothies or trying to keep plants alive…. It’s just a small thing that quietly changes my days. At first, I thought my answer would be something sensible. Like… reading more, sleeping earlier, keeping a calendar or remembering to water the flowers before they start writing their wills.

That habit that’s made the biggest difference to my life is simple. Surprisingly enough.

I started paying attention. And that’s all about it.

To the first sip of coffee before the house wakes up, to the sound of rain against the window, to Charlie deciding that every toy and blanket belongs to him, to finding my favourite mug already clean in the cupboard, to the smell of fresh bread in the bakery, to the little moments that don’t seem as important at the time.

And that’s because I realised something. Life rarely announces its happiest moments. There’s no dramatic soundtrack or fireworks. No one appears with a sign saying ”You will remember this day forever”.

Instead… Happiness sneaks in. It arrives wearing slippers and sits beside you while you are reading a book. It hides in an ordinary Tuesday. It waits in a conversation that lasts longer than expected.

And the funny thing is, those moments were always there before… I just didn’t notice them.

We’re often so busy waiting for the holidays, the promotions or the next big adventure that we accidentally overlook the tiny joys happening every single day. Like a stranger smiling, a good cup of coffee, the fresh bed sheets, an evening that asks for nothing. None of these seem remarkable. Until you realize that they have quietly become your favourite memories.

Now, I’ve made it a habit. Every evening, I ask myself one question. ”What was today’s little joy?

Some days, the answer is very obvious. Other days, I have to think a little harder. But, there’s always something.

Maybe that’s why life feels different now. Not because my days have changed. But because I have changed the way I look at them. And strangely enough… that has changed everything!
