The Quiet Rituals of Sunday.

There was a time when Sundays felt like a countdown. By late afternoon, I’d already be thinking about Monday and whatever comes with it. Lesson plans, early alarms, lunches…. The weekend suddenly felt as though it had one foot out of the door… There days, I’ve started looking at Sundays a little differently.

Not as the end of the week. But as a gently reset. Not the kind you see on social media, where someone colour-coordinates their pantry, meal preps for seven days and somehow, deep cleans the entire house before lunch.

I admire those people. But, I am not those people.

My Sunday resent is much quieter… Let me tell you all about it.

  1. I start with opening the windows. No matter the weather or the season. There’s something satisfying about letting fresh air in to wander through the house, carrying away the stillness of the week before.
  2. Then, I make myself some coffee. Always. Warm but also iced during the summer months. It’s my way of telling myself that there’s no rush today. The world can wait a bit longer.
  3. I like to enjoy my coffee in the living room with a show on, the fun news or some music. I fluff the cushions on the sofa and I make up the covers again.
  4. I water the plants that are still bravely waiting for me outside in the garden, despite my questionable gardening skills.
  5. Before dealing with the rest of the house, I like to tidy up the kitchen and wash whatever is left in the sink from the breakfast I just had.
  6. Then I put on a film I have watched a million times. Not because I feel like watching it again, but because familiar stories have a funny way of making a house feel even more like a home.

I don’t aim for perfection on a Sunday. There is always some things that end up left undone. A pile of laundry, a cupboard that needs sorting and cleaning… There is a drawer full of mysterious cables. Fun fact, I have made peace with all of that. And that’s because my Sunday reset isn’t about the house really, it’s just about me. It’s about waltzing into Monday morning feeling like someone quietly looked after me. Even if that someone was a version of myself from the day before.

There is something comforting about waking up to an empty sink. A favourite mug waiting in the cupboard. The fresh sheets. A tidy corner. A clean bathroom.

Monday will not disappear because of these little things, but it feels gentler. And perhaps, that’s all we’re really trying to do. Not prepare for a perfect week, but create a home that whispers ”Welcome back”.

And, honestly, I think that’s enough.
