The Little Things I Hope I Never Outgrow.

Growing up is a strange business.

When we’re children, we cannot wait to be adults. We dream about staying up late, making our own decisions and eating cake whenever we feel like it… And just fyi, whoever started that rumour clearly never had to pay a mortgage or clean a bathroom…

Anyway… One day, without really noticing it, you become an adult. You start getting excited about vacuum cleaners that actually work. You have a favourite supermarket. You proudly tell people you got a good deal on olive oil.

It’s a slippery slope.

But, somehow along the way, I realised that growing older doesn’t have to mean growing serious. There are certain little joys I hope I never outgrow… Like getting excited when my favourite mug is clean and I can use it again. Not because it’s expensive. It’s just my mug. Coffee just tastes better from it, and no amount of science will convince me otherwise.

I hope I never outgrow opening the windows first thing in the morning to let in all that fresh air. There’s something magical about it. For a brief moment, it feels as though the world is waking up alongside you.

I hope I never outgrow wandering through a bookshop with absolutely no intention of buying anything. Of course, this is a lie I tell myself every single time. Forty minutes later, I am standing at the till with a book I didn’t know existed an hour ago and convinced myself I desperately needed. Books are sneaky like that.

I hope I never outgrow stopping to admire someone’s garden. Not because I know anything about gardening, we have made that clear already. My own plants have an alarming tendency to view my care as more of a suggestion than a survival strategy. But, I do admire the effort. The optimism. Every flower planted is a quiet belief that tomorrow is worth preparing for.

I hope I never outgrow laughing at myself. Because, let’s be honest, life provides plenty of material. Like waving at someone who wasn’t waving at you. Walking confidently in the wrong direction. Or spending ten minutes looking for your glasses while they are sitting on your nose.

I hope I never outgrow rainy afternoons. The kind that give you permission to make another cup of coffee, put a cosy jumper and convince yourself that folding the laundry can wait until tomorrow. Rain has a way of making home feel like where you’re supposed to be.

However, most of all, I hope I never outgrow noticing. A song that unexpectedly reminds you of someone. The smell of fresh break from a bakery. The satisfaction of changing into comfy clothes after a long day at work. The tiny victories that nobody applauds because they are too ordinary.

And maybe, that’s the trick to a happy life. Not collecting extraordinary moments, but those that quietly become extraordinary because you stopped long enough to appreciate them.

We spend so much of our lives chasing the next big thing that we overlook the little things already sitting beside us. A warm mug, a favourite chair, a good conversation… A quiet evening. They are easy to miss because we don’t make much noise. But perhaps that’s why they matter so much. They are gentle reminders that a beautiful life isn’t build in grand gestures. It’s built in small moments, repeated often enough to become home.
