I was one of the few among my friends that could happily say, and with pride, that I had never broken a bone before. Not even once. Not during school years. But, in 2022, that little fairytale came to an end for me.
It was August, 19th, of 2022. Just a couple of days before going back to work after a good summer holiday. It was actually the beginning of my work in the school where I am now, and I was so happy to start fully into the new school year. So… before going back to teaching, I decided to clean the house on a nice summer day. Everything was going alright, until I went down the last stairs to the entrance’s hallway. That’s where it happened. That’s where my foot slipped off the step causing me to lose balance and fall down a couple of steps to the end. But, funnily enough, that foot and leg were intact. It took me a couple of minutes to realize what was happening with the other one and when I brought it forward, yes, it had somehow remained back on another step, I saw the damage.
I had never had a bone broken before. And I had never ever seen a broken bone before. Or something broken anyway. However, I immediately knew my ankle was broken. Dislocated and broken. My own foot was turning blue…
Anyway, long story short. I was hospitalized for half a month. It was a trimalleolar fracture with three pieces of the my bones having been broken due to the fall. When they took me to the emergencies in the local hospital, I was immediately put under and when I woken up, my leg was surrounded by beautiful metal bars going in. Unfortunately for me, the swelling was massive and the doctors had to wait for a week and a day before they could put me under again to fix the damage. After the second surgery, which lasted for 6 hours, my leg looked more like a butchered thing and I was so high due to the anesthesia.
Due to the injury and the extensive care that I needed after, I had to stay home from August until January. I returned back to work with a limb and eventually, that went away as well. I can admit that the weather does affect the bones and, depending on the forecast, I sometimes feel the changes. Swimming helped a lot over summer to get my ankle in a decent shape. And recently, when I got married, I was able to dance all night without any problems.
