”Can I ask you something?”
If someone asked you to describe your home decor style, what would you say? Minimalist? Scandinavian? Modern? Vintage?
I have thought about it more than once. Mostly while standing in a homeware shop, convincing myself that I absolutely don’t need another candle or another little trinket for the coffee table in the living room. Or another mug.
The truth is… I don’t think my decorating style has a proper name. And if it does, I haven’t found it yet. What I do know is this: I want my home to feel like a deep breath. Not perfect, not magazine-worthy…Just, comfortable.
The sort of place where people take off their shoes. Where someone says ”Can I make us a coffee?” without feeling like they need permission.
I like soft blankets draped over the sofa because someone actually uses them. Book that have been read, not colour-coordinated. Candles that have malted down because they were lit on ordinary Tuesdays instead of being saved for special occasions. A favourite mug sitting by the sink because tomorrow morning will arrive sooner than expected. Fresh flowers, when I remember. Plants doing their best despire my ongoing negotiations with gardening. A little bit of organised chaos. Enough that the house feels lived in and not stages.
Sometimes, I think we spend so much time trying to make our homes look beautiful and we forget to make them feel beautiful. The homes I remember most aren’t the ones with perfect cushions. They are the ones that smelled like coffee and echoed with laughter. The ones were someone always insisted you stayed for one cup of tea or coffee. Those are the homes that stay with us.
Not because they were flawless, but because they made us feel welcome.
Maybe that’s my decorating style after all. Not Scandinavian or modern or rustic… Just ”Please, come in”. And if you happen to leave feeling a little lighter than when you arrived, then I think I have decorated my home exactly the way I hoped.
