Sharing Thoughts

My Favourite Mug is Quietly Judging My Other Mugs.

I have a confession to make… I have far too many mugs…

Now, I realise that ”too many mugs” is a matter of personal opinion. Mine is probably somewhere around ”There’s no more room in the cupboard’‘.

Every time I walk into a homeware shop, I tell myself the same thing. ”You absolutely do not need another mug”. Five minutes later, though, I am walking out with one that has tiny flowers on it. Or a little heart. Or a lovely quote. Or a shape that somehow convinces me coffee will taste better. And in my defence, sometimes it does! Or so I say to myself.

The funny thing is that despite owning enough mugs to serve coffee to a small village, I keep reaching for the same one. Every. Single. Morning. Without thinking. It’s become such a habit that I don’t even look anymore. My hand just knows where it lives… Which, got me thinking… The other mugs must have noticed by now.

I imagine the cupboard has become surprisingly dramatic. The favourite mug sits proudly at the front. The others whisper among themselves. ”Here she comes”, ”Do you think today’s the day?

The cupboard door opens, my hand reaches in, straight for the favourite. Again. One mugs signs dramatically. Another mutters ”Honestly, why did she even buy us?”. The Christmas mug only gets called into action once a year. The oversized mug keeps insisting that I will appreciate its capacity one day… The pretty floral mug remains optimistic buy saying ”Spring is coming. This is my season”. Meanwhile, my favourite mug doesn’t say anything at all. It simply gives me a look. The sort of look that says ”It’s not personal, it’s tradition”.

And perhaps, it is. Because when I stop to think about it, it isn’t really about the mug. Not entirely. It’s about the routine, the comfort, the familiarity. The first cup of coffee, before the day begins, asks nothing of me. Somehow, using the same mug every morning feels like pressing the ”Start” button on that day.

It’s become part of the ritual. Could I use a different mug? Of course. Will I? Probably not. At least not tomorrow or the day after that. The others will simply have to be patient and their time will come.

Eventually. Probably… Although, I did see a rather lovely mug in a shop window the other day. Perhaps, one more wouldn’t hurt. Right?
