Dogs. Just dogs.

Good morning. It is a beautiful, hot, Sunday morning and instead of trying to find a small corner to cool down or a swimming pool to go to, I am sitting here with a cup of coffee and a glass of water to go along with it. I came across this writing prompt about dogs or cats being the better pet to have. You know me, I had to answer and share my thoughts on that subject of which one is better and why. However, I am not going to make it that general, as everyone is different and they might prefer one or the other OR not even one of them but a bunny or a hamster. Instead, I will answer from personal experience of being a dog mother for a good while now and why I’ve always preferred dogs over cats…. In my family, we’ve always had dogs. My parents had a dog before I was born and two after I was born. I grew up playing with them, ”torturing them” as I like to say. Both of them were too old by the time I came around, but they were patient and I was taught to love animals in general and respect them. Unfortunately, I do not have pictures to share. Maybe one day, If I find any.

By the time I was half way through primary, my parents decided to bring another dog home. He was a poodle- maltese mix, with a strong personality and very bossy and with a temper that could match nobody’s. I loved him and I named him Scott. Scott was the dog that helped me be more responsible and learn how to care for an animal from a young age… Sure, I continued going about my normal life and most of the time it was my parents that cared for him. But you get it.

I am now a proud dog mother. I have two dogs in the family, even though one is still my mother’s (but he lives with me). Every day I have to take care of things related to the dogs. My husband is the one that feeds them every day, except on weekends, but when it comes to spending time with them, letting them out, playing, it’s mostly me as I am the one coming home earlier on a daily basis. Plus, the cuddles! I provide the best of cuddles, I am sure of it!

But why do I prefer dogs more than cats? Let’s talk about that.

Cats, although beautiful and good pets for certain people, are divas. I love calling them divas. They are way too independent for my liking. Way too uncaring sometimes. They can be cold and distant. Over the years, I have grown close to maybe two or three cats. Sure, I find them cute and whenever I see one, I just have to pet it if I can. But I don’t think I would ever choose one to be my companion…

Dogs can be messy. Whiny, big or small, loud… But I love the affection they show. They are depending on their human for the food, the attention, the time one can spare to be with them and do something with them… Some are unlucky because they end up being left behind or hurt. And I hate the people who do that. To no end. But let’s see the bright side of the matter.

So, I have two dogs. Snoopy and Hermes. They can be divas, attention seekers and very loud. Also, they know not what personal space is. They are extremely jealous… And Snoopy, he is extremely demanding! But how can i not love him? Look at that face!!!!! He always looks annoyed or pissed off with the world, but he has a resting b**** face as I say.

Hermes, on the other had, is the kind of dogs that gets attached to others easily. Abandoned from families, he ended up with us in 2016 and since then, he is my big love. He is extremely clever, even though he acts like the complete opposite. He is a good companion for trips when he gets used to the idea of being in the car and on his way somewhere with us. He is very patient and barely barks even for food time. Not like Snoopy who will bring the house down! Hermes knows when someone is not okay and he will always be there to comfort them. With lots of kisses and attention and toys.

So… yes. I am one for the dogs. So far, I’ve never had a big dog of my own, maybe in the future I will. But no matter the size or the breed, dogs are my big love.
