Sharing Thoughts

Saying goodbye to…

Daily writing prompt
Describe a phase in life that was difficult to say goodbye to.

Over the years, life allowed me to follow various paths and each one of them had some pros and cons, the good and bad sides, the good and the bad memories, the good and the bad moments. So far, I do not regret choosing and waltzing down those paths. After each phase of my life, I keep some of the good moments and I cherish them, but I always keep in mind the bad moments and try to learn from them… Sometimes, saying goodbye to one of those phases was easy and yet, some other times, it was hard… So, I am going to share the last phase in life that was difficult to say that goodbye to.

It was summer of 2017 when my mother took me along to a trip back in our homecountry, Greece. There were many reasons why we flew back and settled down in our old apartment. One of them was my personal situation. Living in Germany had not been kind on me the last one and a half year and sometime along the way, I had lost myself and reached the bottom… Eventually, my mother thought that taking me away from my daily reality of Germany was going to help. And boy, did it help!!!!

Being back in Greece meant a lot to me. It stills means a lot whenever I fly back during a break from work. Even if I have a thousand things that need to be done or nothing at all, I enjoy every single minute of being back home. So, in 2017, I began finding my old self. I reconnected with friends from the good old days, began taking trips down to memory lanes, began spending time in familiar places…. I caught myself smiling more. Eventually I found a job and then another and had a daily routine. My mother returned back to Germany to be with my father and I finally had my own little place to live in with my dog. I invited friends over, chilled with Netflix by myself, stayed up late when I could and just enjoyed life.

It was all good until I decided that Greece, although the perfect country for me, was not the right country to live in if I wanted a good future. And with that, I refer to the professionaly future, not the personal future. In 2019, late 2019, I decided to move back to Germany and I managed to do so a bit before the big lockdown across Europe hit when Covid had appeared…

That decision was probably one of the hardest ones I ever had to make. Saying goodbye to the apartment I lived in, the last memories I had created with my friends and saying goodbye to those friends was the hardest thing that I did. I put on a smile and said ”See you soon” and I do so every time I go back, but it never changes.

Oh well…
